Question 1. How do you provide security to medical students under your placement program?
Answer: We have very strict security measures to keep our medical students out from harm’s way. Before you go we check our destinations in Canada, China, Ghana, USA and UK if these are safe and politically stable. If the situation is unsteady they don’t go. Our overseas staff will see to it that medical students are safe.
Question 2. Will I be paid if I join this placement?
Answer: The medical placements we offer are on voluntary basis. We do not pay students during their electives.
Question 3. What type of VISA do I need?
Answer: Tourist VISA is allowed in all our host countries. You must have a passport that is valid for the duration of your trip. If your passport expires less than six months after you are due to return home we recommend that you apply for a new one before submitting your visa application.
Question 4. How long will I be allowed to stay within the placement program destination?
Answer: The students are given the latitude to determine how long they would stay within the placement destination. the least time one can take is 2 weeks and the most 4 weeks. however, deliberations and negotiations can be done should one be willing to extend their stay past the stipulated time and duration as per our program specifications.
Question 5. Is there a registration fee? How much are the elective fees?
Answer: We require payment of $200.00 USD registration fee to facilitate formal processing of your application and confirm your conditional place in the program. Program fee varies on the destination and number of weeks of your elective.

Question 6. What are the accommodations like?
Answer: GCEI offers the best accommodation for students like you. We have houses that can accommodate a large number of people in a very quiet and relaxing environment so you can unwind after a day's duty from the hospital or clinical facility.
Each bedroom can accommodate 4 - 6 persons, male and female are separated.
The house has a gate keeper for security and a care taker to ensure cleanliness.
Students find their own meals for breakfast and dinner.
All bathrooms have showers, toilets, basins and mirrors. Please bring your own towel and toiletries.
Question 7. Will My School Give Me Credit After I Complete My Placement?
Answer: Taking your placement abroad means gaining so much experience and with this, your University may offer credits for joining an elective abroad. However, we do not guarantee it. Both institution can provide certification of completion upon request as a proof that you have successfully completed our elective program.

Question 9. Is your organization allowed to participate in works of charity as a way of helping in improving the living standards of the people living in vulnerable and less privileged areas?
Answer: As you are aware, all the hospitals we work with are public hospitals attending to under-served populations. These hospitals occasionally run out of basic supplies such as gloves, requiring, for example, patients purchase gloves in order for a doctor to attend to them. While it is not a requirement of the program, we highly encourage you to bring with you any medical supplies or equipment that you can donate to the hospital. They need to be things that are easily portable in your checked in luggage:
Some students have previously held fundraisers in their school and communities prior to attending the program and used the funds to purchase supplies. We encourage anyone who can hold a fundraiser for the benefit of the hospital to please do so; it will go a long way in assisting the communities that have availed their hospitals for our programs. The hospital will assist with advice on how to utilize any funds raised.
Community service includes visits to orphanages, feeding program, crayon, toys, etc, would go a long way making for a fun day for the kids.
Question 10. How do I get inducted in my country of destination?
Answer: Our GCEI local staff will meet you at the airport. A Welcome Kit will be provided with information in your living area, local office, telephone numbers, public transport, map, bank, doctors, and restaurants. You’ll be given a tour of the area using local transport.
Question 11. Does the placement fee cover medical and travel insurance?
Answer: Medical and travel insurance are not covered by the placement fee, you have to provide your own. In case a student falls ill, our local staff will assist with the hospital accommodation, insurance liaison, and make sure that that the patient gets the best medical attention.
Question 12. What types of food do you serve?
Answer: Our chef alternately prepares fish, chicken, pork, beef and rice. He will mix this with garden-fresh, crisp vegetables that were picked from the nearby farm. But if you are a vegetarian or on a special diet, keep us informed and we’ll prepare a special dish just for you.
Question 13. What clothing is appropriate?
Answer: In the hospital you are required to wear a lab coat or scrubs.
Bring along some warm clothing for the night. In all our destination summer is nice to experience as as well as winter which you may need heavy clothes .
During daytime any comfy or casual attire will do on your days-off. Carry some smart outfits for dinners or special occasions. For footwear tag along comfortable shoes and open-toed sandals for hot months.

Question 14. Do I have to speak the local language?
Answer: It is not necessary, English is their second language. However, the basic words will be covered during the orientation program. Enjoy moments with locals, you’ll see their funny side when you try to speak their dialect with a twisted tongue.

Answer: Yes, we can accommodate any group of students or professionals wanting rural experience, research or reach out programs. Fill us in with your details and we’ll customize a placement plan that will fit your needs.

Question 17. What inoculations do I need?
Answer: We are not in a position to give medical advice, you will need to consult with your healthcare provider prior to travel.
Question 18. Are there any obstacles in the destination countries?
Answer: As a heads up, you will find yourself out of your comfort zone. Many of us are not used in dealing with people of a different culture and living in an unfamiliar environment. There might be situations that you have never encountered before like scruffy patients and inferior hospital facilities. One thing for sure, it will be an uplifting experience and everything not as bad as you think.
